State Study: Maine

Since we visited Maine for the first time in August, I decided that was the state we would begin with. It's too bad we can't visit every state as we study it. It was really neat to see the things we read about in our books.

While we were in Maine, Molly saw a lobster and sailboat cookie cutter set she wanted. We used them to make sugar cookies.

  1. The cookies look great! We did a small scale state-by-state study last fall. We drove cross country from California to New York, heading north first through Oregon and Washington. As we went, we marked our route on a blank map (a line outline of the country and the states but nothing else on it). Then, we marked the states as we went, and put a sticker of each state flag around the edges as we traveled too.

Once we got to New York, and settled into our new apartment, we went to the library and got books on each state we traveled through. We had already read two books the previous year that were organized so that each state had a page of facts, illustrations/photos, and statistics. We've since been to Connecticut and Massachusetts so we need to get books to study them now.

  2. What a wonderful study and great ideas! We live in PA, and were vacationing in DE this weekend. I did have my kids put together a horseshoe crab model today. Perhaps we can do some additional studies. You have inspired me! Glad I came over to visit from the HHH.

    Many blessings,
    Lisa
